Frequently Asked Questions

For long-term outdoor use, solution dyed acrylic (SDA) fabrics are widely considered the best option. These fabrics are coloured during the fibre stage rather than dyed afterwards, which helps them resist fading and perform better in sun and weather. We stock a range of solution dyed acrylic fabrics from SunReal, which offer performance similar to well-known brands like Sunbrella. They are designed for outdoor cushions, seating, and marine environments where durability matters. In strong direct sunlight, SDA fabrics can often perform well for around five years, although New Zealand’s UV levels are extremely harsh, so results can vary. For longer life, we still recommend bringing cushions inside or covering them when not in use.

Solution dyed acrylic fabrics are made by adding colour pigments directly into the liquid acrylic before the fibres are formed. This means the colour runs all the way through the fibre rather than sitting on the surface like traditional dyed fabrics. The result is much stronger fade resistance, better durability, and improved performance outdoors. Both SunReal fabrics and Sunbrella fabrics are solution dyed acrylic, which is why they are commonly used for outdoor furniture, marine seating, and high-exposure areas.

Yes, we occasionally carry Sunbrella marine grade fabrics, which are also solution dyed acrylic and known for excellent durability and fade resistance. These are not part of our permanent stock line, so availability depends on supply. When we are able to source them from our supplier, we bring them in, but once they sell out they may not always be replaced immediately.

We stock a range of SunReal solution dyed acrylic fabrics, which offer strong outdoor performance similar to Sunbrella. SunReal fabrics are designed for outdoor and marine environments, providing good resistance to fading, moisture, and general wear. They are a reliable choice for outdoor cushions, seating, and other exposed areas where durability is important.

Not all of them. Many of our core outdoor fabrics are solution dyed acrylic, but some of our printed fabrics are printed polyester. Printed polyester fabrics are suitable for outdoor use, but they generally do not perform as well in strong sun compared with SDA fabrics. As a rough guide, printed polyester fabrics may have around 500 hours of direct sunlight exposure before noticeable fading, although this can vary depending on conditions.

All fabrics will change over time in UV exposure, especially under New Zealand’s intense sunlight. Solution dyed acrylic fabrics are designed to resist fading far better than most other materials, which is why they are commonly used for outdoor furniture and marine settings. Even with high-performance fabrics, we recommend covering outdoor furniture or bringing cushions inside when not in use to help extend their life.

Cleaning methods depend on the specific fabric, so it’s always best to check the product details first. In most cases, prompt spot cleaning with mild soap and water helps keep outdoor fabrics looking fresh. Solution dyed acrylic fabrics are generally easy to maintain and handle outdoor conditions well. Avoid harsh chemicals unless they are recommended by the manufacturer.

Yes, outdoor fabrics can work very well indoors, especially in sunny areas like bay windows or high-use seating where extra durability is helpful. Solution dyed acrylic fabrics are particularly useful in these spaces because they handle UV exposure and wear better than many indoor upholstery fabrics.

Yes. Ordering samples is a great way to compare colour, texture, and weight before committing to a fabric. Outdoor fabrics can look different depending on lighting conditions, so testing samples in the actual space where they’ll be used can make choosing much easier.
