WHY WE LOVE LINEN

by Martha's Furnishing Fabrics

29 June 2017

There is no secret we love linen and talk about it often. It’s qualities environmentally and as an interior fabric simply make you want to surround yourself in it.

Let’s Talk Flax

Flax, the fibre that linen is made from, is one of the most natural and uncontaminated fibre crops available. Not only does this hardy fibre need nothing in terms of chemicals and irrigation to grow it returns nutrients to the ground as well. The whole flax plant is used so nothing goes to waste and very little energy is required to process the fibre. It is biodegradable and recyclable into paper and insulation materials.

It uses 5-20 x less water in its production than cotton and synthetics. Flax is one of the few plant species that is capable of producing truly blue flowers.

Lets Talk Linen Fabric

Linen is durable and strong and has been around since Egyptian times, being used to wrap mummies, which when discovered, the linen was still intact. The spectacular durability and long life is due to its tensile strength, which is twice as high as that of cotton and three times that of wool.

Its use as an interior fabric for curtaining and upholstery is beneficial because of:

• Its air permeability

• It’s heat conductivity

• It’s excellent filtering against:

• Chemical mediums

• Noise

• Dust

• It’s anti-bacterial properties

• The silica present in the fibre, which protects it against rotting

• Virtually lint free

• It’s non-static

• It’s non-allergenic

• It’s a natural insect repellent

• It provides UV protection.

It is highly absorbent, up to 20% of its own weight in moisture, which lends itself to being a great temperature regulator in an interior setting and as clothing next to your skin. It is stronger wet than dry so can be washed and dry-cleaned and thus dyes beautifully.

The beautiful long silky fibre gives linen curtaining the beautiful weight, lustre, durability and drape is what separates it and makes it a premium option for curtaining and upholstery.
